There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of most borders.

The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that contains numerous amenities aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
